About

My name is Janice Provan. I am a Sexual Health Co-ordinator employed by Dorset County Council. I am a nurse with over 25 years of varied experience, and thoroughly enjoy my role working in partnership with secondary schools and other service providers in Weymouth and Portland, to develop new ways of working to reduce the number of unplanned pregnancies in under 18’s.

In the secondary schools, I engage in direct contact with the students by offering a confidential drop in service to boys and girls from all year groups. Here they are welcome to seek my advice and support regarding relationships, sexual health and contraception. This service is usually available over the lunchtime period on a weekly basis.

I am also involved in the delivery of sex and relationship education (SRE) working with the support of the school nursing team and staff from The Park Centre. Recent reviews by the Health Development Agency concluded that there is good evidence that school based SRE, can have an impact on young people’s knowledge and attitudes, delay sexual activity and /or reduce pregnancy rates. I feel it is vital that young people today receive accurate information around the subject of sex, sexual health, sexuality and relationships.

I would like the young people in Weymouth and Portland to be better informed in order to understand the value of their own sexual health, the importance of respect for themselves and others, and have the means to protect against unwanted outcomes of sexual activity such as infection and pregnancy.
