Relationships

Why talk about relationships?

• Helping children to handle their relationships successful starts when they are very young.
• Children need support to develop their skills in handling relationships successful.

What should I talk about?

• Understanding and respecting others.
• Knowing how to end a relationship kindly.
• Respecting yourself and standing up for what is right for you.
• Knowing how to deal with negative feelings, like sadness.
• Knowing how to say sorry.
• Knowing how to ask for help.
• Understanding different kinds of relationships, both heterosexual and homosexual as well as different ways of loving.

It is helpful to discuss relationship skills, such as;
• Understanding that a loving relationship does not have to be sexual.
• Being able to say “no” and not being pressured to do anything they don’t want to do.
When should I talk about this?

• Children need to start talking about relationships early.
• Starting early means they can learn gradually and build up what they know, a little at a time.
• Parents may need to make the first move in talking to their children.

How should I talk about this?

• It is important to try and be as open and relaxed as possible as this will help your child to feel comfortable.
• Try to let the subject crop up normally and when it does, talk about it.
• Be as easy and as natural as you can.
• Talk a little every now and then and be prepared to talk about things more than once.
• Encourage your children to ask questions and do your best to help them feel they can ask you anything.
