Why should I TALK ABOUT Contraception?

  • Unprotected sex puts them at risk of unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.
  • Teenage pregnancy rates in Weymouth & Portland are higher that the National average.
  • Two thirds of young people say they didn’t use contraception the first time they had sex.
  • You only have to have sex once to get pregnant.
  • They need to know they have a choice about when they have a baby.
  • If you don’t their friends will! You can make sure they get accurate helpful information.

How do I TALK ABOUT Contraception?

  • Answer questions when they are asked.
  • Try not to get embarrassed, this will only make them think that’s how they should feel.
  • Answer questions honestly and openly.
  • Use soaps or magazine articles to prompt discussions.
  • Ask them what they already know or what they think about contraception.
  • Don’t just tell them they can talk to you at any time – instigate conversations.
  • Find out about different types of contraception and offer to go with them to visit a contraceptive clinic.

What do I TALK ABOUT?

  • There are lots of different methods of contraception available AND contraception is FREE!
  • Emergency Contraception can be taken up to 72 hrs after having unprotected sex (sometimes longer – always seek advice).
  • Condoms are the only type of contraception that protect against sexually transmitted infections.

When is it the right time to TALK ABOUT Contraception?

  • When you talk about how babies are made, tell them there are ways grown-ups can choose when to have a baby.
  • If a friend or family member is pregnant, you can ask when they think is the right time to have a baby, then move the conversation onto how to prevent pregnancies.
